National Breast Cancer Awareness month runs throughout October, and Avalon in Alpharetta has launched its "Paint Avalon Pink"campaign to encourage local action.

Twenty retailers and restaurants at the shopping center will have in-store promotions tailored to the campaign, and portions of their sales are going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and other breast cancer research efforts.

Shoppers can participate in the awareness campaign by wearing pink to the Wednesday kick-off event, which runs from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at venue’s plaza.

About 1 in 8 women in the country — about 12 percent —will develop breast cancer during the course of their lifetime, according to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. An estimated 246,660 new cases are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year, along with 40,450 deaths, although studies show death rates have been decreasing since 1989.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that Georgia's breast cancer death rate is at 23 deaths per 100,000 women. This follows with a statewide new incidence rate of 123 per 100,000 women.
