Christy Tucker Sims, the Henry County woman who suffered third-degree burns on her face, neck, arms and chest two years ago when she was doused with industrial-strength drain cleaner, will be among the featured guests Oct. 6 at a gathering of Live Your Awesome Life Ministries.
The ministry, scheduled to meet at the Balzer Theater in Atlanta, is an off shoot of a blog started in 2012 by LaDetra White.
The Decatur mother of two launched the Live Your Awesome Life blog shortly after she began sharing her thoughts on social media as "a sort of purging my consciousness."
Readers suggested White write a book but she chose the blog, garnering over 200,000 page views from people across the globe over the past three years.
“I realized this was bigger than me,” White said.
And so while vacationing in Florida in January, White said God spoke to her. He wanted her to start a ministry for women.
Weeks later, she sent a note to 13 friends inviting them to her home and asked them to her “birth my baby.” she said.
They all agree and a month later the women hosted their first ministry meeting.
The October gathering, set to run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., will be their third. To register, log onto www.awesomelife.eventbrite.com.
Participation is free and open to women of all ages, faiths and ethnicities looking for a safe place to share their convictions.
Sims was at home in 2013 when her then boyfriend Andrew Fordham asked her to bring a towel to the bathroom. When she approached the door, Fordham threw sulfuric acid drain cleaner in her face.
He was found in guilty of aggravated assault and aggravated battery in the acid attack in July and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
“We will share testimonies from women who have been through something and come out on the other side,” White said.
