Q: I am looking for Applegate Organics andouille sausage, which is made with turkey rather than pork. Although many stores in the area carry Applegate products, I have not found one that carries the andouille sausage. Thank you. — Allyce Macon, email
A: Made with chicken, turkey and Cajun seasonings, Applegate andouille sausages are perfect tossed on the grill or used in your favorite jambalaya or gumbo recipes. You’ll find four-packs for $7.49 at Whole Foods, 2111 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta, 404-634-8981.
Q: The popularity of the HBO series “Game of Thrones” has spawned a number of products, one of which is a cookbook called “A Feast of Ice and Fire.” I have the cookbook and would like to make two of the dishes: Honey Spiced Locusts and Dornish Snake with Fiery Sauce. So, where can I find freeze dried locusts and a rattlesnake, approximately two pounds, cleaned and gutted? Thanks! — R. Kennedy, email
A: Love the show, the meals, however, seem a bit daunting. But, I applaud your sense of culinary adventure. A locust is, essentially, the swarming version of the grasshopper, and pretty much interchangeable when you’re serving them spiced and honeyed. But, locusts are much more difficult to find. The good news is that you’ll find freeze-dried grasshoppers atPetco, 3756 Roswell Road, Atlanta, 404-841-9733. Fluker’s freeze-dried grasshoppers sell for $8.99 per 1-ounce can. Yes, they’re lizard food. If you want to follow what others have used for that particular recipe, then you might consider freeze-dried crickets, which tend to be a bit larger. As for the rattlesnake meat, butchers all over town were flummoxed over the request, even those who sold alligator. To be on the safe side, you’ll have to order the rattlesnake meat, and I found an excellent outlet that sells to restaurants and resorts. Sierra Meat and Seafood, 800-444-5687, can ship out a two-pack of cleaned whole rattlesnakes for $45.95 per pound. The snakes are fairly small, and each pack of two weighs between 1 1/2 to 2 pounds. Note that they contain bones. You also can check out the website at www.sierrameat.com. Bon appetit!
Q: Please tell me where I can find a clear flat or semi-gloss nail polish. I am an elderly man with cracking and delaminating fingernails. I bought glossy clear nail polish, which helps prevent the cracking and delaminating, but it looks so shiny that it is disconcerting when I see my hands. I am willing to buy it online, but would prefer to avoid the shipping charges, if possible. Thanks. — Vernon Webb, Brookhaven
A: You’re looking for a polish with a matte finish, and the good news is that it’s a fairly popular item. There’s no need to order online when you can check out several brands locally to see which one might best suit your needs. Ulta, One Buckhead Loop, Atlanta, 404-266-3559, stocks at least three matte finish polishes, including Essie Matte About You, $10, Orly matte top coat, $9, and OPI matte top coat, $9.
Q: I’m trying to find Red Gold canned tomatoes. I like all varieties of this brand, so I’m not even looking for a particular one, but I do like the diced tomatoes and some of the flavored ones. If you could find this for me, I’d really be thrilled. To me, other brands just don’t compare. Thank you. — Annette Barnes, Atlanta
A: Annette, I found several varieties of Red Gold canned tomatoes, including petite diced — plain and flavored. You’ll find $14.5-ounce cans for 89 cents at Kroger, 2205 Lavista Road, Atlanta, 404-633-8694.
