As summer nears, area farmers markets are ramping up. Especially in the age of the coronavirus, it’s a way for small producers to meet consumers one on one.

With many restaurants temporarily shuttered, many small farms are having to find ways to adapt.

However, farmers markets across metro Atlanta plan to go on — with some new guidelines.

That includes the weekly open air market in Atlanta’s West End, which will keep vendors spaced apart and use increased sanitation measures.

The vendors rotate weekly at the market, held 2-7 p.m. Sundays, at Best End Brewing Co. Each vendor will be spaced at least 8 feet apart. There will also be minimal seating options available as the market tries to keep people spaced out.

“We ask you to come out and support, but please do not crowd in groups, and please BE socially responsible about how close you are to your neighbor,” the market wrote in a Facebook post. “We strongly believe, now more than ever supporting local is more important than ever.”

Additional guidelines for the market include:

  • Common "touch points" will be sanitized frequently
  • Measures are in place to limit contact
  • Limit one customer per tent at a time
  • Each booth must have hand sanitizer available for vendor and customer use
  • Vendors must wear gloves when handling money or produce and change the gloves before touching another surface
  • Vendors are encouraged to explore no-contact payment options
