Top athletes from across the region will gather on Saturday to compete in Centennial Olympic Park.

They’ve undergone extensive training and conditioning. They have followed specific nutritional plans.

Just like all top athletes.

Even those with four legs.

More than 50 canines are expected to compete in the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge Eastern Regional Event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the the park. The event is free.

They will compete in six events such as agility, diving dog, Jack Russell hurdle racing, fetch it!, 30-weave-up-and-back and the incredible freestyle flying disc competition.

What’s dog diving? Competitors take a running leap off of a 40-foot dock into a 19,000-gallon pool of water.

The free event is open to all breeds. You can also bring your pet to bark his favorite to victory.

One local competitor is 4-year-old Jäger, a German Pudelpointer.

Jäger’s owner, Megan Underwood of Gainesville, said to get him in the zone, he runs, retrieves and swims a lot. To avoid injury, he is stretched and does routines to warm up and cool down.

“He’s an athlete and I want him to do his best,” she said.

Winners from the eastern regional event receive an automatic invitation to the National Championship in St. Louis in September.
