Visit Fernbank’s ‘virtual destinations’ during museum’s temporary closure

The Atlanta natural history museum is sharing educational videos on social media

Things to know about Atlanta's Fernbank Museum

Fernbank Museum of Natural History is temporarily closed amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the learning has continued thanks to its Museum at Home experience.

Visitors can’t come to the museum, but they can visit what Fernbank is calling “virtual destinations” online.

“We’re actively working to provide new, educational and entertaining content for you to enjoy from home, including educational videos, fun facts, behind-the-scenes photos, quizzes and more,” a description on the website reads.

The museum is using its Facebook and Instagram channels to share videos about animals and experiments families can do at home.

Science Adventures include demonstrations on how to make a cloud in a bottle and an experiment about air pressure. Animal Encounters with a box turtle and corn snake are also among the virtual museum experiences. The Fernbank team also conducts story time with readings of science-based children's books such as "Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs" and "Stripes of All Types."

In addition to following along with #MuseumAtHome on social media platforms, virtual attendees can use the hashtag to share their experiences. They can also glimpse the museum without the crowd in #MuseumMomentofZen. #MuseumAtHome videos will also be shared on Fernbank's Museum at Home web page, where there's more information on the "virtual destinations."
