Decatur-based nonprofit re:loom offers the perfect way to find great gifts for your loved ones – and give back to those in need at the same time.
Not only does re: loom create gorgeous, handwoven rugs, the organization also gives back to the Atlanta community in an incredible way by hiring homeless women and teaching them to weave so they can support their families and build a better future.
The program is a part of the Initiative for Affordable Housing (IAH), which was founded in 1990. Each employee works fulltime, has a stable salary and full health care coverage. The aim of the nonprofit is to give employees a financial foundation, leadership skills, and a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
The colorful rugs are handwoven on a loom using donated and upcycled textiles like clothing, fabric and uniforms. And to re:loom, the one-of-a-kind pieces each have their own unique story to tell.
"Weaving requires taking things slowly, practicing and tenacity — all important life skills; and each weaver makes her pieces based on her own ideas, some based on the weather, others on joy and sorrow," says the company.
The rugs range in price from $90 to $300, are in varying sizes and are reversible.
