There’s no need to wait for Black Friday to get into the holiday spirit. The Spruill Gallery’s 24th annual Holiday Artists Market begins mid-month. The entire gallery will be transformed into a marketplace Nov. 14-Dec. 23.
Handmade jewelry, toys, ceramics, fiber items such as scarves, aprons and towels, bath products, seasonal décor, wood works and many other goods will be for sale.
“Sometimes we even have furniture,” says Jennifer Price, gallery director. “We have one lady that [makes] these beautiful jackets out of old repurposed fabrics from the Middle East. They are awesome. I’ve seen her making really long vests. This [past spring I saw] her making skirts. I don’t know what she will be making for the artists market but I know it will be really cool.”
Several of the participating artisans have had work exhibited in the gallery this year.
“We have people come from all over Atlanta to see what we have,” Price says.
Although artists sometimes have a few of the same craft in stock, other creations are one of a kind, and when sold there will be no more available. “In theory, you could come every week and see a different show [of goods for sale],” Price adds. Items can range from $1 to $400.
The market kicks off with an opening reception on Nov. 19, when attendees can meet artisans, and enjoy food and drinks while shopping. On Dec. 16, artisans who have been selling especially well will return to present their latest crafts that were not already featured at the event.
Spruill is also gearing up for its first exhibition of 2018, titled “The Finnish Illusion,” and features art by three Finnish women, two of whom currently reside in Finland. The other artist, Ilona Cutts, lives in Atlanta.
All three plan to appear at the February opening. The exact date has yet to be scheduled.
“It’s a lot of surreal artwork,” Price says. “I am really excited because we usually do a lot of local artists. In this show, we have two that have never been to Georgia.”
