We all have an artist somewhere inside of us and Paint 4 Fun (6080 Ga. 42, Suite 105, Rex, Ga. 30273; Monday-Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 679-899-6815) is attempting to draw that painter out of its customers one canvas at a time. The Paint 4 Fun art studio opened in May of this year with a mission to teach painting to novices while also having fun.
"It is important for our guest to know that our classes are for people that want to either learn how to paint or just enjoy the actual process," said owner and business manager Latonya Allen. "The idea is to have fun while creating art."
Immediately after entering the studio my visual was flooded with a wide variety of wall art and individual paintings spread all over the brightly colored walls. Some paintings were volunteered to the studio from previous guests.
"We accept the paintings and drawings from our students and promptly display them," said Allen.
The studio offers classes and instructional events for adults and children. The adult art classes are $23 per person with groups of 10 people or more paying $17 per person. Allen recommends larger groups for a more interactive experience. Couples or individuals can also be included in larger groups depending on the scheduled date and availability. Family art classes fall under the same price range with kids costing $16 per person. Paint 4 Fun classes are taught by Allen and artist-in-residence A.J., a 24-year-old painter, sketch artist, songwriter and musician. A.J. describes her teaching technique as "hands on" and "step by step." Paint 4 Fun attempts to make the uncomfortable act of creating art more comfortable by allowing guests to bring snacks and drinks to classes.
"We take our students through the process of laying background, creating shapes, using brushes and coloring before allowing them to finish their visualization," A.J. said.
A photography major coming out of college, Allen wanted to reconnect with her passion after years of working in corporate America.
"I had been away from art too long, so this was a way back for me," she said. After visiting studios in Atlanta as a customer she noticed that art instructors seemed far away from the class and wanted her business to be different.
"The difference between what I saw and what we do at Paint 4 Fun is much more personal and hopefully more fun," Allen said.
Paint 4 Fun is the first business of its kind on Southside metro Atlanta in Clayton County. A quick Google search of "Art schools for adults in Atlanta" directed me to 34 within metro Atlanta.
"I feel like we needed this within our community," Allen said.
