Despite the thousands of YouTube makeup tutorials that exist, sometimes it's still difficult to perfect the smoky eye, winged eyeliner, contour or highlight. Although the tutorials instruct people how to apply makeup, they can't tell people what things work for them and what doesn't; but Mobile Muses can.
Mobile Muses is an in-home makeup service created by New Orleans-born makeup artist Tracy Ewell, set to launch on May 15 this year. According to Ewell, Mobile Muses is all about beauty, health and wellness.
Ewell started doing makeup 19 years ago after a woman in her art class showed her how to paint a woman's face. That same day Ewell decided that makeup is what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.
When she isn't working on the launch of Mobile Muses, Ewell works in the film industry, which she has done for almost a decade. Currently, she is getting ready to start a film with Nicholas Cage, Anna Hutchison and Talitha Bateman. Though, Ewell says that working in film has made her become more aware of how much she's missed working with the community, and now she's ready to show the world that she can do both.
Once it launches, Mobile Muses will offer services such as special occasion makeup, makeup lessons, lashes, eyebrow shaping, tattoo cover, hair blowouts, up-dos and spray tans. Spray tans will be available as either one-night applications that will wash off after showering, or as an application that will last for up to five days, even with showering.
Mobile Muses will also offer makeup application and makeup lessons. Special occasion makeup applications will help women get magazine ready; lessons will allow women to have Ewell or one of the makeup artists who work with her, shadow the client and give her instruction while she applies their makeup. This is key because it gives the artist a chance to correct bad habits.
"[Mobile Muses is] not so much about selling makeup, it's more about learning," said Ewell. "Every face is obviously a completely different set of rules from what they want to how their face is shaped. It's not a one-size=fits-all."
Ewell has two freelance artists that will assist her with Mobile Muses. She also has a strong network of highly trained and qualified union artists that she can call on—at least a dozen located right here in Atlanta.
During a makeup lesson Ewell, or one of her artists, will go to a client's house and show her (or him) how to apply makeup, where to apply it and tricks and techniques such as the correct angle to hold a brush.
According to Ewell, Mobile Muses customers will learn everything from the color theory of their face and how to tone and correct to how to apply bronzer and blush; they'll also learn how to do their eyes for a night time look and a day time look. Ewell and her fellow artists will also show their customers how to transform daytime eye makeup into a nighttime look.
"I hope to build confidence and make a woman feel pretty again," said Ewell. "Sometimes it takes a fresh pair of eyes to come in and show someone what's great about their face and to show them how to enhance the things that are great and downsize the things that aren't."
Prices for the services offered are $100 for special occasion makeup sessions; $150 for a 90-minute in-home makeup lesson, $35-plus for eyebrow shaping, $25-35 for lashes ($10 if a client already owns lashes); $75 and up for blowouts, depending on details of what the client wants; $50 for a spray tan, lasting for up to five days; $35 for a one-night tan.
Ewell anticipates that one makeup lesson will suffice for the average woman. However, as life brings on physical changes you might find you need a "re-do" lesson later.
Appointments for Mobile Muses will be based upon availability, but Ewell expects that clients will be able to make appointments hopefully within 24 hours notice but no more than three days in advance.
"[Makeup is] like the perfect jeans which were made for you and always fit, " said Ewell. "Makeup always fits. That's what's great about it. No matter what size you are and no matter what you're going through, a lipstick, a blush and a little foundation can make a woman feel confident."
The "muse" in Mobile Muses means to inspire. So get inspired, learn something new and become a better, more confident you.
