“Roads, Rails and Rivers: the History of Transportation in Georgia” is the theme of the April 23 History Day Symposium at the Georgia Archives.

This all-day event will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Georgia Department of Transportation. It should be of great interest to historians and genealogists, since it covers all eras of Georgia’s history.

The seminar will be free and run 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with pizza provided for lunch (for a small donation).

Speakers will include James A. Owen (University of Georgia) on travel and trade in Georgia from prehistoric times to 1900, followed by Patrick Sullivan and William Tankersley of New South Associates on Atlanta’s historic streetcar systems. GDOT, road building and the creation of modern Georgia, 1916-2016, will be the topic of Ashton Ellett (UGA).

During lunch, there will be a screening of “Down the Dixie Highway,” a Georgia Public Broadcasting documentary.

The last two sessions will feature Edward Hatfield of Kennesaw State on Atlanta and the politics of mobility, and Sandy Lawrence of GDOT on historic preservation and transportation.

A tour of the Georgia Archives will follow for those who preregister (for the tour) with becky.sherman@usg.edu. For further information, speaker biographies or directions, see georgiaarchives.org or call 678-364-3710. The Georgia Archives transportation exhibit will run from the symposium through July.

Guide to Savannah

“Savannah Guidebook” by Polly Wylly Cooper and Laura Connerat Lawton, published by Cherokee Publishing Co., is a great tour of a great city by two Savannah women.

They cover Georgia’s oldest city with a variety of themed tours, as well as other information. If you are going, this book would help you determine what to see and how: a walking tour, a bus tour, or even a Segway tour. Each of Savannah’s squares is covered in-depth. Since the authors are local, it’s hard to imagine they left anything out. They include guidance to places near Savannah as well.

The book is $16 plus shipping from Cherokee Publishing Co., P.O. Box 1730, Marietta, GA 30061 or 770-973-1151, and also is available in bookstores.
