I love pillows, I change mine frequently in my home and office. I also love giving personalized handmade gifts. This project allows you to incorporate a sweet message and a pretty pillow into one lovely gift.
Gather:
3 patterns of mix and match fabric
Photo fabric
Dried lavender
Buckwheat hulls
Scissors
Sewing thread
Sewing machine
Optional: Pinking shears
Optional: Embellishments such as bits of vintage jewelry
Create:
1. Cut two large rectangles at 12 inches by 8 inches out of the same fabric. Cut one medium rectangle at 11 inches by 7 inches out of your second fabric and one small rectangle at 10 inches by 4 inches out of your third fabric.
2. Come up with a quote, greeting or special phrase that you would like to put on your sachet pillow. Type it up on the computer using fun fonts and colors. Be sure your document is smaller than the small rectangle of fabric you cut in step 1. If you’d rather hand draw your quote, you can use a fabric marker on fabric of your choice!
3. Print out your quote using the directions on the photo fabric packaging. Cut out your quote so that it is 5 inches by 3 inches.
4. Center your quote onto the small rectangle you cut in step 1 and stitch them together.
5. Center that rectangle onto the medium rectangle you cut in step 1 and stitch together. Next, center that rectangle onto one of the large rectangles you cut in step 1 and stitch together.
6. Now that all your layers are together, you will attach that to the second large rectangle you cut in step 1. This rectangle will be the back of your sachet pillow. Match them up so that wrong sides are together and sew along the edge of the medium rectangle, leaving about 3 to 4 inches open on one side.
7. Fill your sachet with equal parts lavender and buckwheat hulls until it is nice and full.
8. Stitch up the remaining 3-4 inches of the seam.
9. I cut the outside edges of my lavender sachet with pinking shears. It helps to prevent fraying and looks quite pretty!
This is a very nice project to do with friends at a craft party. Everyone could bring scraps of fabric and embellishments to share.
