Using the same methodology from its Best U.S. High Schools ranking — including data sources such as Common Core of Data and The College Board, as well as ranking indicators such as college readiness and math and reading proficiency — the publication compiled the list.
Schools were grouped into metro areas according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. In total, about 17,790 public high schools were ranked. The top 40 metro areas represent those that have the highest proportions of schools ranking among the top 25% across the country.
The list features the metro areas in ascending order of representation and metro Atlanta came in the top 20. The area also came in ahead of other metro areas including Washington, D.C. and San Francisco.

At No. 13, 70 schools ranked in the top 25%, which represented a proportion of 37%. In total, 190 metro Atlanta schools were ranked and the school that ranked the highest nationally was Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, which was No. 12. The placement for the Gwinnett County special public school comes more than a month after it topped Niche.com's 2020 ranking of the top 10 best public high schools in the state. It was joined by other metro Atlanta high schools including Alpharetta High School and Marietta's Walton High School.
