Lulu, a 5-month-old spayed Basset hound, is a sweet, affectionate dog who was surrendered because her family could no longer care for her. She previously lived with other dogs, a cat and a small child. The Basset hound is generally great with children when socialized properly. Children in the home can help with daily care, but should not be expected to take full care of any pet without adult supervision. Please bring all children (and any existing dogs) to meet Lulu. Basset hounds can be noisy when left alone or frustrated, so an apartment (or other close quarters) is not recommended for Lulu. She will need further housetraining assistance, as well as proper exercise, obedience training and mental stimulation, including daily walks. A fenced yard would be helpful for her freedom and training assistance, as Bassets are large when grown and love to explore. The Basset has a keen nose, and Lulu might enjoy nosework (one of the newer canine sports) as a mental stimulation exercise. These dogs are not stubborn, but they do need the proper motivation for training. Positive methods are good for this, but be careful that Lulu doesn’t become fat, as that puts extra stress on her joints. Be prepared to confine Lulu when she is not being supervised (a crate is recommended), as all dogs in a new environment can be a bit stressed, and do not need freedom in the home right away. Research the breed, and come meet this sweet young dog. Lulu will need a rabies shot; the cost is included in her adoption fee. She has been microchipped and dewormed. She will be available at 2 p.m. today at the Atlanta Humane Society Howell Mill Campus, 981 Howell Mill Road N.W. Sealed bids will be accepted starting at 10 a.m. if more than one party is interested. Please note that the highest bidder must meet adoption qualifications.
