Little Man, a 4.5-month-old neutered Shetland sheepdog, is a fluffy, active puppy who needs a home with a family that wants an active, hairy dog. Little Man will need daily brushing to be his best, as Shelties have long coats that can become matted easily. These smart, medium-sized dogs are typically playful, outgoing, energetic, noisy and people-oriented. Little Man lived with another Sheltie, and the previous owners said he played a bit roughly with her, so bring any existing dogs to meet him. He is not housebroken yet, so proper confinement and structure is crucial to teaching him to be clean indoors. Children in the home can help with daily care, but should not be expected to take full care of any pet without adult supervision. Please bring all children in the home to meet this puppy. Though a yard will be a plus for exercising Little Man, dogs not do well when left in yards by themselves, and Shelties are often barkers, so they are not necessarily a good choice if noise will be a problem (e.g., in an apartment). Shelties are intelligent and are trained best with positive methods. They can be sensitive, and do not do well with heavy-handed handling. The Atlanta Humane Society recommends crate training for all new adoptees to help with housetraining and general adaptation to a new environment; most dogs learn to love their crates, and they certainly help the humans to be less frustrated. All canine and feline adoptions from AHS include free extras, but the initial cost of a dog or cat is only part of the money a new owner will need to spend to properly care for a pet during its lifetime. Research the breed, then come see if this fun dog is right for you. Little Man will be available at 2 p.m. today at the Atlanta Humane Society Howell Mill Campus, 981 Howell Mill Road N.W. Sealed bids will be accepted starting at 11 a.m. if more than one party is interested. Please note that the highest bidder must meet adoption qualifications.
