“Profiles of Poverty” is currently on display at the Colony Square atrium through Aug. 29. The pictures were taken in Atlanta, Savannah and Jasper by several photographers who wanted to show the face of poverty as well as images of hope.The project marks the 100th anniversary of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Georgia, a nonprofit that provides help to people who are in need. CEO and Executive Director John Berry said he hopes the exhibit, which will move around to other locations in the city, will raise awareness about the issue of poverty and dependency and inspire people to help in any way they can.

Living without air conditioning in Vine City, Bertha spends most of her time reading the Bible. Bertha uses a baby stroller to carry her possessions when she leaves her home. The troubled neighborhood will soon be the site of the new Falcon s Stadium.

Davis explains: "Rarely do all the elements of a photograph - subject, light, color, emotion - come together in a single 1/60th of a second. This was one of those rare moments. Thomas Wheatley and I spent an intense week interviewing and photographing people who live under the highway for a cover story on homelessness. As we walked away from interviewing "Skipper," a homeless former airport cargo worker, I turned and I saw this." Every day more than 300,000 cars travel on the downtown connector and the massive I-20 interchange, where three of the country's busiest interstates converge in the shadow of the state Capitol. The knot of concrete bridges and underpasses designed to streamline high-speed car travel is an engineering marvel - an architectural feat that, ironically, you can't really appreciate until you step out of your car. But in addition to moving cars along, the ramps and bridges also create gaps, nooks, and crannies that have become shelter for homeless men and women. They flock to the state-owned area and ignore the "no trespassing" signs because it's near downtown, where many of the city's homeless service providers are located.

Last winter was one of the most brutal in Atlanta, including two snowstorms and temperatures dropping into the single digits. The photo, part of the “Profiles of Poverty “exhibit currently showing at Colony Square atrium, shows one man’s attempt to make a home out of leftover materials. JOHN GLENN

This image, taken inside the old Atlanta Constitution building at 143 Alabama St. by M. Chris Hunt, is part of the "Profiles of Poverty" exhibit.The building has sat empty for many years after the AJC outgrew the structure and moved to Marietta Stret in 1953. The building now has literally a sea of waste, mini bottles and garbage in it due to the homeless making it a dwelling. Fires, disuse and time have taken their toll on the aging structure. (M. This photo of Lavardo Lawrence by Renee Brock is part of the "Profiles in Poverty" exhibit. Lawrence lost his job but is slowly getting back on his feet. Lawrence tells people that before they judge, they should walk a mile in his shoes.
