Atlanta’s homeless will receive warm socks and towels, thanks to participants at Passion 2016.

Thousands of pairs of sock and towels are now stored in the warehouse at City of Refuge, an Atlanta-based nonprofit.

"This will be absolutely well used and is a huge benefit to us," said the Rev. Bruce Deel, CEO of City of Refuge. which will share the items with some of its community partners.

Passion 2016, a Christian-based gathering drew thousands to Philips Arena downtown and the Infinite Energy Center in Duluth. A third gathering was held at the same time in Houston.

The conference was founded by Atlanta pastor Louie Giglio in 1997 to reach millions of college students around the world.

In all, more than 10,000 towels and 60,000 pairs of socks were donated to the City of Refuge and Star of Hope in Houston.

Attendees also surpassed a $575,000 goal to help build a hospital in war-torn Syria. Over several days, they raised $785,127. The excess amount will go to assist with immediate medical needs in the region.

This year’s conferences will set the stage for Passion 2017, which is expected to draw more than 60,000 college students to the Georgia Dome.
