New Pokémon games coming to Nintendo Switch, mobile

Similar to the original 'Pokémon Snap,' players will be tasked with taking photos of Pokémon while riding in vehicles.

A week after announcing a new “Pokémon Snap” for Nintendo Switch and “Pokémon Smile” for mobile, two more new Pokémon games are coming to both platforms.

“Pokémon Unite” was just announced with a to-be-determined release date. “Pokémon Café Mix” is available now on Nintendo Switch and mobile. As the names indicate, each game involves Pokémon characters, but the goals are very different.

"Pokémon Unite" is free-to-start and is the first strategic team game in the video game series. Players face one another in five-on-five team battles where they will cooperate with teammates to catch wild Pokémon. They can also level up and evolve their own Pokémon. Players are timed as they aim to beat their opponents' Pokémon while trying to earn more points than the opposing team.

Meanwhile, "Pokémon Café Mix" is more relaxed, taking the characters out of the battle atmosphere. The game, which is also free-to-start like "Pokémon Unite," contains in-game purchase options and is a unique puzzle game.

Players can swirl around Pokémon icons to link them together. To do so, players have to grab a Pokémon icon and drag it next to another icon of the same Pokémon species. Once they are linked together, icons will be cleared.

The player will work at the cafe, which they own, alongside Pokémon to prepare drinks and dishes for Pokémon customers by completing puzzles. Special Café Skills from the Pokémon on the café’s staff can be used to help finish puzzles. After finishing a puzzle, the player can give a customer their order.  Cafes can be upgraded as more puzzles are completed. The different upgrades, including new tools and added areas, may lure new Pokémon patrons.

The new games come years after the huge success of “Pokémon Go,” which debuted in 2016. That game used augmented reality, while the two new mobile and Nintendo games focus on devices.
