You can do your part to alleviate hunger in your community and all it takes is a trip to your mail box.

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its 24th annual nationwide “Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive” on Saturday.

Last year, letter carriers throughout the United States collected nearly 71 million pounds of non-perishable food. More than 1.8 million pounds were collected in Georgia.

Making a donation is easy. Customers should leave non-perishable food donations in a bag near their mailboxes for pickup. In the days leading up to the food drive, letter carriers will deliver special bags that may be used to make donations. Donors can also use their own bags. Food collected during Saturday’s drive will be delivered to local community food banks and food pantries.

The most-needed foods are items such as canned tuna, salmon, beans and peanut butter. Also needed are canned fruits and vegetables, whole grain, low sugar cereals and fruit juice.
