With its many shopping venues and theatrical shows, Cobb County has plenty of amenities for their residents to enjoy. But exploring historical structures and specialty restaurants aren't the only ways locals can explore a potential new interest. From line dancing classes to tutorials on how to make your own hand scrub, Cobb County P.A.R.K.S. hosts dozens of affordable courses to help you learn a new skill. To help you choose an activity that's right for you, we've picked out five of the best classes currently being offered.

Though current sessions have already started for most courses, residents can join the ongoing classes at any time. Call the instructor or recreation center noted in the course description for more information.

Tai Chi

This Chinese martial art can be used for self-defense, but many people practice it to improve their overall health and coordination. Learn how to control your breath and relieve stress with this low impact workout hosted at the C. Freeman Poole Senior Center. The class costs $30 for residents and $35 for non-residents. Classes are held at 10:30 a.m. every Monday.

Beginner Line Dance

Dust off your favorite boots and show off your best moves at this beginner's line dancing class. The class, which is taught at the C. Freeman Poole Senior Center, goes over basic moves and techniques and is recommended for people 55 and older. Classes cost $24 for residents and $29 for non-residents and are held at 10:45 a.m. each Friday.

Knitting

Start digging for the old skeins of yarn in your closet and come to the C. Freeman Poole Senior Center for knitting lessons. The two-hour long classes, held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Wednesday, are $30 for residents and $35 for non-residents. Students will learn how to create knit-and-purl stitches, how to cast on and bind off and other simple techniques. A supply list will be provided by the instructor.

Creative Writing

Work with an instructor to express yourself through a short story, poem or novel at this creative writing class taught at the West Cobb Senior Center. Classes cost $7 for residents and $9 for non-residents and are held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. each Wednesday.

Beginner Spanish
It's never too late to learn a second language. Pick up basic conversational skills, learn elementary grammar and enjoy cultural lessons at these Spanish lessons offered at the C. Freeman Poole Senior Center. Classes are $30 for residents and $35 for non-residents and are held at 10 a.m. Thursday.
