Growing up in the North, where snow was a way of life, springtime was always something to celebrate. Today, the famous “Game of Thrones” line “Winter is coming” brings up big sighs and memories of resignation over blizzards to come at home in Buffalo, N.Y. So, when warm, sunny days start to show up in Atlanta around January and February, I start feeling giddy.

I wasn’t the only one this past January. On a balmy Sunday, late in the month, my friends and I decided to climb Stone Mountain (a first for me). The park and the mountain were overflowing with families out to break a sweat and conquer the great rock.

The appreciation that most everyone had for nature's surroundings and the beautiful day was almost palpable. That is, except for a 5- or 6-year-old girl who wanted her parents to know that whatever the reward was after such a tough climb, it would not be worth it to her.

On that type of wonderful weather day, and several we’ve had between then and now, I inevitably hope to myself, “Maybe this is it — maybe the warm weather is here to stay until next fall or later.”

One thing we can be sure of, the spring equinox has occurred. Athletes such as the Pease brothers, featured in this issue, are in full training, and no doubt inspiring many to sign up for 5K and 10K races.

For a little more laid-back fun, there’s plenty to do to keep you outdoors. And we trust our guide to festivals, parks and al fresco dining will provide you with a great place to start. Let the festivities begin.
