Power options aplenty for this multi-function device

If you’re planning to set up camp away from your vehicle for the first time, you want to make sure you have the necessary wireless gear in case of emergencies. Eton’s Scorpion Solar-Powered All-Terrain Multi-Function unit has that and more. It includes a digital AM/FM and NOAA weather radio, LED flashlight, USB cell phone charger, clock, and bottle opener all in one compact device. It can run on either its 6V DC battery, through solar power, or via a hand crank, which helps ensure you won’t be without the essentials when you need them most.

The Scorpion is also tough and durable enough to stand up to the elements and is IPX-4 rated for splash protection from all angles. Ideal for emergency situations, the unit has a NOAA weather band digital radio to turn into weather forecasts and alerts. You can also use the AUX input to play your own music. The unit has a battery charge indicator to let you know when it’s running low, and the USB phone charger is compatible with iPhone 4.

Dimensions are 2.5 x 6.375 x 2 inches. Weight is 10.8 ounces. Available in green or orange.

Eton’s Scorpion is available at Wal-Mart and other national retailers. For more information and a list of retailers, visit etoncorp.com. Price is $59.99.

The adventure video scene

GoPro is not the only game in town when it comes to shooting video mounted on your handlebars or the brim of your helmet.

Venerable Kodak has released its reasonably priced multiuse portable HD video camera with wireless connectivity called Kodak PIXPRO SP 1 Action Camera. They say it’s durable too — waterproof (to 32 feet), shockproof, freezeproof and dustproof — needed when you take a dive bombing the downhills through a rock garden on your mountain bike.
