Bob and Iris Rose discovered two major perks in moving from Connecticut to metro Atlanta: Living closer to their daughter and taking advantage of Georgia’s tax exemptions for senior citizens.
The couple looked for low-maintenance homes in a community with other retirees. They moved from a 2,500-square-foot home into a 2,100-square-foot house on a corner lot in Canton’s Soleil Laurel Canyon.
Bob, 69, a retired salesman, chatted about their new three-bedroom, two-bath home and the lifestyle they enjoy in the 55-and-up community, which is about 35 minutes from their daughter in Roswell.
Q: What were some of the priorities for this home?
A: One was location. When you come up here and you see into the mountains of Georgia and you see how beautiful it is and all of the amenities you get, when you walk around and talk to the people. That was probably the biggest. And the other was the community itself. The residents are probably the best sales personnel.
Q: What amenities does Soleil Laurel Canyon offer?
A: We have an indoor and outdoor pool, eight tennis courts and a gym on premises. We have a whole clubhouse with a ballroom and a fitness center. Right outside of the clubhouse is the Fairways of Canton, which is a public golf course.
Q: What amenities do you and Iris use the most?
A: I use the tennis courts the most, and Iris is a member of the Soleil Singers.
Q: What advice do you give people who are moving into a retirement community?
A: Remember that it is a very tight-knit community, and if you want a lot of activities and you want to stay active, it's a fantastic place. But on the other hand, because it's very tight-knit, you get to know your neighbors quite well and they get to know you quite well. If you want loads and loads of privacy, you won't get that. Your neighbors will know if you go to the doctor. It's not only the neighbor, but it's the whole neighborhood. It can also be a very positive advantage. They have people here who will drive the older people to the hospital.
