Marcia and Tom Ledford’s home is full of furniture and art with stories. This includes paintings from around the world, and a side table in the living room that Marcia Ledford’s father made. Some of their decor, like the green sofa in the den, they’ve had more than 20 years, and some, like the poolside furniture on their back patio, have been with them for more than 40 years.

“Buy things that you love and that are timeless, and if you do that, they’ll last you a lifetime,” Marcia Ledford. “You’ll have the same love affair with them 20 years later.”

Marcia Ledford, who is owner of Ledford Interior Design, says she always tries to buy high quality items that will last for decades. Over the years, she and her husband have redecorated their spaces, but they’ve managed to keep a lot of the same core pieces.

“Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of your life,” she said. “Don’t necessarily buy things that are faddy.”

When they decided to renovate their bathroom and kitchen in 2014 and 2017, respectively, they followed this same advice, choosing a timeless airy color palette and marble, which they felt would stay relevant for years to come.
