Atlanta designer Brian Patrick Flynn has built his reputation on a mantra of great design on the cheap.

Brian Patrick Flynn and Hollis Smith's chic 1955 East Lake home balances crisp white details and an innovative twist on a front "porch." A custom U-shaped gathering deck with built-in bench seating outside the front door allows guests to gather in style.

A vintage owl umbrella stand sourced at Kudzu Antiques adds a touch of whimsy to this architectural "pause" just inside the front door where a welcome bench has storage for shoes. The nook was previously a closet that divided the room until Flynn ripped it out to create a more open floor plan.

Illustrating his knack for blending custom and off the shelf, Flynn's great room features a George Nelson Bubble lamp hovering like a Fifties invasion movie spaceship over the room, custom drapes in Windsor Smith fabric from Kravet and a Memphis Steel rug from Crate & Barrel.

To add a touch of retro personality to his sleek new Ikea kitchen, Flynn printed a black and white photo of his grandparents out for drinks in the Fifties on billboard vinyl and installed the image like wallpaper. The image makes for an apropos tribute to the home's 1955 origins.

Flynn abhors matching furniture sets, unless they are vintage like this Seventies dining set repainted in glossy white, reupholstered and perfectly accented with an Ikea pendant lamp painted a coordinating violet.
