Wine cellars hot trend among Atlanta vino lovers

Wine cellars with tasting rooms are among the hottest trends among Atlanta homeowners who love vino.

Jim and Susan Anderson are passionate about wine. They used to have two wine storage areas in their Brookhaven home - one for California wines, the other for European. Now, like many upscale homeowners, they have one elegant cellar that holds everything with room for tastings with friends.

Celebrity photographer Denis Reggie also wanted his wine cellar to be a trip back in time. "You go from this traditional house through old iron gates and it's like you're taking a trip to Europe a century ago," said Reggie. "I love it."

The cellar has a barrel ceiling with aged stucco that gives it a cave-like quality. There's also reclaimed terra cotta from France that looks like it did 100 years ago. The timbers are from an old Georgia barn. The decor is an array of French, English and Italian antiques.

A 15th century Italian panel Reggie found at a local antique store is the focal point of the cellar.

Reggie's cellar, carved out of a space under his front porch, is big enough for a tasting room and 1,800 bottles of wine.

The cellar has large paintings that reflect the Andersons' love of Italy, as well as sculptures and antiques that give it some old world charm.

The Andersons own about 6,500 bottles of fine wine. Climate controlled wine cellars, wine bottle refrigerators and small wine closets are among the hottest amenities in homes today.

Furnishing wine cellars with period decor is also a trend. The Andersons have a bronze statue of Automne gracing the entry to their cellar. The statue symbolizes the grape harvest in France.
