Urban vibe adds to appeal of Crown Candy loft

A nook under the stairs that was once a closet was reconfigured as a cozy desk area.

The second bedroom belongs to Lance Hirsh's daughter, who stays with the couple frequently. The pink space holds her antique iron bed from France, a cranberry chaise and white dresser.

A door from the second bedroom leads to the deck and from there, a spiral staircase leads to the couple's private rooftop retreat.

The wood cabinets were painted blue, copying a photo they saw in a food magazine. A bar area was removed to make way for the wine refrigerator.

Terri Hirsh bought the 1,600-square-foot, two-story unit at Crown Candy Lofts near Oakland Cemetery eight years ago. When she married Lance two years ago, the couple renovated to create more space.

The Hirshes renovated the kitchen, where they added a spacious island with a concrete top, shelves for copper-bottomed pots, a knife drawer, a big stainless steel sink and a commercial-grade stove with a vent hood.

The couple also refinished the floors in their two-bedroom loft.
