Trammel Crow CEO's penthouse soars

See inside the home of Ron Terwilliger, CEO of Trammell Crow Residential. The outspoken advocate for urban mixed-use development lives in a 5,000-square-foot penthouse at Ovation in Buckhead.

By JULIE HAIRSTON: Trammell Crow Residential CEO Ron Terwilliger is an outspoken advocate for urban mixed-use development. And he walks the walk, literally, from his 5,000-square-foot penthouse at Ovation in Buckhead to his office right across the street.

From foyer to guest suite, Terwilliger's sky-high home is a showcase for classic design, art treasures and priceless personal memorabilia. This 18th century chinoiserie clock greets visitors near the front door.

The clock, which still keeps perfect time, is decorated with intricate hand-painted scenes.

African walnut floors extend throughout the unit, which also includes two fireplaces, the only ones in the building. The lofted living room opens onto a broad balcony with a panoramic view from downtown to Buckhead. The penthouse includes 700 square feet of balcony space.

Even on a rainy day, the downtown skyline and Peachtree spine through Midtown dominate the view from the broad front balcony in this composite photo made up of five separate images. The guest suite and master suite also have access to private balcony space.

This spectacular crystal chandelier descends gracefully from the coffered ceiling in the living room. The chandelier was so large it had to be hoisted into the penthouse by helicopter. Terwilliger is offering the penthouse, including the chandelier, for sale. Jo Ellen Bradley of Beacham & Company is handling the sale.

An arched entryway and graceful columns frame the transition from the foyer to the 24-foot living room.

The brass closure on the cabinet shows the rich patina of its age.

This antique table next to the living room fireplace is attributed to early American cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe. A similar table resides in the White House.

Interior designer Oliver Carter guided the decoration of the penthouse, including the dining room. Its features include a barrel ceiling, picture molding below the chair rail and silk wallpaper above.

The languid painting at the head of the dining table is reflected in the ornate gilt mirror Terwilliger brought to Atlanta from his New York residence.

The kitchen is well-equipped for entertaining sizable gatherings, which Terwilliger frequently hosts. Appliances include three refrigerators and two dishwashers. In addition to charitable and corporate events, Terwilliger also holds political fundraisers in his penthouse. The unit can comfortably accommodate as many as 100 guests.

This handy butler's pantry lies between the kitchen and living room. The wine cellar holds 300 bottles. Custom cabinets throughout the house were created by Cabinet Resources.

Rich colors dominate the small keeping room next to the kitchen. Built-in bookshelves harbor plenty of reading material to pass quiet moments.

The guest suite in tones of ivory and chocolate brown can be closed off from the public areas of the penthouse for privacy.

The buckled leather pillow adds a dash of high style to the guest bed.

This evocative painting hangs in Terwilliger's master suite.

Hanging on the other side of the entrance to the master suite, this shadowy portrait offers a study in contrast paired with the soft ivory tones of the rain scene.

The master bath includes a steam shower and access to roomy his and hers closets.

A bright, spacious vanity tucks into the master bath's anteroom.

The nearby home office sports an animal motif. The zebra rug is made from a real zebra skin. Many of the chairs are upholstered in faux animal prints.

This striking chandelier in the office came from Ironies, a shop in Los Angeles. It is made of real animal horn.

Look out below! This lion trophy is one of Terwilliger's African safari souvenirs. He had to delay the installation of the railing on the balcony where the lion is displayed until after it was hoisted up. The lion was too big to move up the stairs.
