Sneak preview: Druid Hills Home and Garden Tour

The master bedroom is connected by French doors to the former bedroom, which has been renovated into a family room for watching TV and listening to music.

As part of the renovations Lindsay and Cox added a back deck and a screened-in porch overlooking the extensive backyard. Druid Hills Home and Garden Tour is 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on April 18 and 19, and 1-5 p.m. April 20. Info: 404-524-8687. www.druidhills.org/tour

Lindsay's home automation system allows him to control temperature, TVs, digital music, lighting and security, all from touch screens throughout the house, or from his laptop.

Interior designer Carol Swetman helped the couple plan the decor. "We started with the rugs," says Cox, "looking for carpets with my favorite colors of coral and red and turquoise."

The kitchen was the most recent renovation. "The rest of the remodeling was easy compared to the kitchen," says Cox. The contractor had North Georgia white oak milled to the exact specifications of the kitchen's original flooring.

Energy conservation features are also built in, allowing the family to monitor the hot water and the HVAC systems from the same system.

Lindsay and Cox began renovating the home shortly after they purchased it in 1989.

The couple travels all over the world for work and for pleasure, and they've collected art and furnishings to complement their home along the way.

When restoring the home to its original appearance, the couple copied old moldings in order to keep the flow between old and new seamless. The dining room is one example.
