Sculptures in motion at Atlanta Botanical Garden

"Sculpture in Motion," the Atlanta Botanical Garden's newest exhibit that reacts to the forces of nature.

"Figure 8 on Open Rectangle" by Roger Phillips is part of the Atlanta Botanical Garden's new "Sculpture in Motion: Art Choreographed by Nature" exhibit that opens May 3 and continues through Oct. 31.

Lin Emery's 'Butterfly" is ready to take flight.

"Two Lines Oblique" was created by kinetics pioneer George Rickey. The 34-foot-tall , Y-shaped stainless-steel sculpture is on loan from the High Museum.

A close-up of Morpho Tower. Kodama's art is nestled in what garden workers call "the spiny forest," a dry, cactus-covered area designed to keep wandering fingers at bay.

'Hokusai' is another Jeffery Laudenslager creation. The sculptures are for sale at prices ranging from $3,500 to $120,000.

'Rockspinner, ' by Zachary Coffin is a magnet for children because the sculpture moves by touch and sunlight. Coffin is the only Atlantan among the 16 artists showing in the exhibit.

JoAnn Burnham of Vero Beach, Fla is captivated by Brad Howe's 'Curva Kelp' sculpture .

'Morpho Tower' by Sachiko Kodama employs electro-magnets and magnetically-charged microfine particles suspended in water or oil to create moving sculptural art forms.

'Airborne' by Moto Ohtake

Prentice's colorful piece is a perfect match for the Botanical Garden's flowers.

Rickey's sculpture is the only one in the exhibit that's not for sale.

Artist Jeffery Laudenslager's 'Mikoshi.'

Tim Prentice created 'Yellow Zingers.' All of the sculptures in the 25 piece exhibit react to the forces of nature - air currents, water, solar power, sound waves, and human energy - to form endless compositions that change over time.

David Fried's 'Self Organizing Still Life (SOS), Terra Incognita" is in the Fuqua Orchid Center. Balls of varying sizes rest on a thick granite slab until moved by sound. Kids love it.

'Masdevallia Extravaganza' by Kristina Lucas. People can view the Garden's Sculpture in Motion exhibit from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays; and until 10 p.m. Thursdays. The botanical garden is closed Mondays. Cost is $12 for adults; $9 for seniors and children ages 3 to 17. Members and children under 3 free.
