Renovation maintains character in Buckhead

This renovated Buckhead home maintains its historical character. Rebecca and Robert Parker were careful to preserve the character of the 1920s home they bought in 1993 when they renovated and expanded the house.

The new music room is larger than its predecessor and has French doors that lead to a limestone veranda. The addition encompassed three floors and made room for the guest room a floor below that offers ample space for visitors.

The dining room grew by almost half, but it's not obvious where the old stops and the new begins.

The Parker's home is one of five Buckhead houses dating from 1910 to 1952 featured in "Buckhead in Bloom," the Atlanta Preservation Center's home and garden tour April 6. The homes were all selected to show how historic homes can be adapted to modern living without losing their period character.

The architectural and aesthetic qualities of the home were maintained during renovations.

A gym was added to the lower level of the house during the renovation.

Renovations were supposed to take 12 months, but that soon turned into 24 months. The architectural firm of Pringle and Smith did the work.

The Parkers say they are not collectors of "things," and there's a clean simplicity to their rooms.

Brick was removed from the back of the house to be used to extend the front facade so the run would be perfectly matched.

The home sits on just under 2 acres and is one of the flatter lots in Buckhead.

The couple kept a close eye on the work during renovations, which took two years to complete.

A streamlined kitchen reflects the Parkers' desire not to accumulate clutter.
