Remodeled Grant Park home maintains Victorian charm

Brooke and Shay Eskew remodel their 10-year-old Grant Park home but keep its Victorian charm, even though the house has an octagon shape.

Shay and Brooke Eskew's Grant Park home has a wraparound porch and second-floor gables that blend with other Victorian homes in their neighborhood. The octagon shape makes it standout in the community.

Shay and Brooke Eskew, with 4-month son Maddox and daughter Olivia, 2, stand in front of their eye-catching home. They purchased the 10-year-old home in 2003 through a foreclosure, and renovated it to their liking.

The Eskew's biggest change to the house was adding a third floor with a dormer. That meant reconfiguring the second floor as well.

Exposed beams accent the ceiling in the great room. A flat screen television was hung on the wall to make the room childproof.

A wrought iron chandelier the couple salvaged from an old hotel in Athens hangs in the dining room.

A breakfast bar opens to the kitchen, where the Eskews tea-stained the cabinets to give them an antique finish. They added granite counter tops with a tile backsplash.

The Eskew's converted the master bedroom by moving walls to build an open staircase to the attic. The room is brightened by windows. "I love that I can look out of different windows and see in every direction," said Shay Eskew.

The former attic is now a bedroom, brightened with four skylights and a radius window.

Moving walls in little Olivia's bright green bedroom created nooks for furniture and built-in shelving.

The couple's former home office is now their children's play room, complete with a rubber alphabet rug and toys.

The walls in the main floor bathroom have a faux Venetian plaster finish.

The basement was remodeled to create a guest room and a tiled bath. The area is wired for a sound system in the event the family turns it into a home theater one day.

The laundry room seems more spacious by putting the washer and dryer against a recessed wall.
