Avondale Estates homeowners personalize trees using ornaments with variety of themes

The Martins' home was built in 1954 and renovated in 2013. The basement was turned in to a recreation room.

The home was built in 1954 and renovated in 2013 with a new second floor. HouseSensationsArt in Lincolnton made the custom steel wreaths with a peace sign motif. Homeowner Megan Martin said she wanted a non-traditional window adornment that promoted peace and equality. "They make me so very happy," she said.

The porch overlooks the wooded neighborhood and shows the home's modern prairie design.

Reclaimed wood from the family's original home serves as accent in the mud room. Holiday-inspired plaid peace cushions decorate the bench seat.

The custom chairs from RH, slipcovered in a graphite-color Belgian linen surround the dining table, The dining room opens to the great room, where metal details include the collection of mirrors and an orbital chandelier. Although the tree has a sea theme, the glassware, holly berries and blanket add red accents between the two rooms.

The great room showcases modern style with a custom RH sofa and chairs made of acrylic and fabric. The art piece above the fireplace is Samsung's "The Frame" television in its art view.

The Luca fabric chair from RH Modern, designed by Milo Baughman, has acrylic panels, brushed brass rivets and custom Belgian linen cotton. The gold-cast trunk side table also is from RH Modern.

Red pillar candles are decorated with holly berries and greenery in the great room. Megan Martin's holiday decor includes a wicker sleigh next to the fireplace and a pewter Nativity scene passed down from her mother.

The renovated kitchen is modern and is open, a feature Megan Martin said she appreciates. The family can be in the same room when she's cooking and when the kids are doing homework or playing on their iPads, she said. The white quartz island has a waterfall design and serves as a spot for casual meals.

Festive plates and placemats, and reindeer on a green-and-red table runner bring the holidays into the kitchen.

The modern stair rail, made of cables, gets a holiday update with garland and berries for the tour.

The three-levels give Megan Martin plenty of areas to decorate and display her eight trees for the family's first Christmas in the home.

Six-year-old Mary Helen's pink room has festive flair with it's own tree. The tree is decorated with purple ribbon and shoe ornaments from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is one of eight trees in the home, which is on the Dec. 10 Avondale Estates Christmas Tour of Homes.

The guest room features festive green and white Pottery Barn bedding, with artwork from Ikea featuring a Volkswagen Bug. Custom-made peace wreaths are hung outside the windows.

Toby and Megan Martin and their family enjoy visiting New Orleans, and beads from past Mardi Gras parades spill over a white tree in one of the home's five bedrooms. A reindeer pillow adds to the festive decor, while a peace wreath can be spotted outside the window.

The "gene" tree showcases ornaments from both sides of the family and pays respect to Toby Martin's mother, Jean. Some ornaments, which are more than 100 years old, belonged to her, while some of the new ones were created by the couple's children. The rocking horse also was passed down to Toby.

A Disney-inspired Christmas tree and a red-and-white holiday quilt continue the seasonal decor into Royal's bedroom. The tree is composed of momentos like Magic Bands and lanyards from trips to the Disney parks and cruise line.

The master bedroom features modern furnishings mixed with traditional holiday decor. Megan Martin brings her love for Christmas trees into the room with one decorated with burgundy and gold ornaments.

Original artwork includes a signed lithograph by artist Harry Wysocki that Toby Martin's parents purchased in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1960s. It hangs over the Oviedo chaise from RH covered in cocoa Italian Brompton leather.

The renovated master bathroom mixes modern and vintage styles. The pendant light above the tub is from Ikea. Dual vanities were added in the 2013 renovation, which also included a custom closet by California Closets.

Floor-to-ceiling marble with gold veining surrounds the fireplace, and two gold LED holiday trees from RH infuse modern style into the home office, one of two in the Avondale Estates home.

The eight-light Columbus sputnik chandelier by Trent Austin Design, with Edison filament bulbs, brings an industrial element to the home office. The metal noel sign is among the holiday accents in the room.

Toby and Megan Martin live in their Avondale Estates prairie-style home with their children, 9-year-old Royal and 6-year-old Mary Helen, and cats Chocolate and Ethan. Toby Martin works in sales for SecureWorks, and Megan Martin is a lawyer and partner at Jarrard & Davis, LLP.
