Photos: Historic West End bungalow offers ‘Afro chic’ farmhouse mashup

A pair of tapestries by Mario Gerth feature Baro Tura of the Arbore Tribe, Ethiopia and Mumuhuila of the Mwila Tribe in Angola. Their frames were designed and built by Christopher Altman and his father, Greg Altman, using materials from The Home Depot. Pillows sewn by Altman's mother with fabric from Nigeria and Ghana are on a sofa from World Market. The fabric was purchased during travels throughout West Africa and at the Malcolm X Festival in the West End.

The bargain finds include two lamps, for $15 each, from Furniture Liquidators of Georgia, on nightstands snapped up on Facebook Marketplace and repainted.

Crisp white bedding in the master bedroom contrasts with the colorful accents elsewhere in the home. The headboard was repainted with a custom gray paint from Southwest Paint & Decorating Center.

Subway tile and walls painted Benjamin Moore's Hale Navy are among the updates to the bungalow's bathroom.

A metal chandelier hangs above the Indian mango wood farmhouse table in the open dining room/kitchen/living space.

A collage of mirrors found via Facebook Marketplace, Letgo app and Offerup are in a guest room, which they rent out through Airbnb.

In the sunroom, a sputnik light found on eBay is paired with Edison-style light bulbs the homeowners purchased at 1000Bulbs.com.

Etsy was the source for the world art on three panels, which is in their sunroom. The pillow covers were created by Adedayo Lawal's sister-in-law with fabric from Nigeria and Ghana. A small African mask is from Côte d'Ivoire.

Deliberation by Mario Sánchez Nevado hangs above one of the home's three coal fireplaces. The pair of chairs, which they reupholstered material from Fine Fabrics, and sunburst mirror were free through Facebook Marketplace.

A ceiling fan snapped up for $50 at BargainMart is over a coffee table created from a metal tray and wooden legs. The rug is from Overstock.

The 2,400-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bath home, which was built around 1911, will be featured in the Historic West End Tour of Homes on June 23.

Christopher Altman and Adedayo Lawal, with his daughters, 12-year-old Malahni Altman and 10-year-old Samorah Altman, moved into their home in Atlanta's West End neighborhood in 2017.

The living room originally was going to have a Moroccan theme, with Adedayo Lawal and Christopher Altman already selecting a rug in that style and a low-profile sofa.
