The Craftsman bungalow in Atlanta's Candler Park neighborhood was built in the 1920s.

Like other homes in Candler Park, the bungalow has a deep front porch, columns and a railing with modern lines.

The dining room table and chairs were both Craigslist finds. When they sanded the top, Stephanie Andrews said they found the table was made of two types of wood. "It created this really cool stripe that you can see down the middle," she said.

Homeowner and designer Stephanie Andrews describes the interior design style as global and collected. The Craftsman bungalow's modern vibe comes from the burst of color, such as blues and greens, in the home.

"It created this really cool stripe that you can see down the middle," she said. The light fixture is from Crate and Barrel, and the walls are Sherwin-Williams Unusual Gray.

In the galley-style kitchen, they repainted the cabinets and added absolute black granite honed countertops, an undermount sink and a new faucet.

Instead of replacing the cabinets, Stephanie Andrews had them repainted in a creamy tone and removed the doors for open shelving.

An eggplant velvet sofa, colorful rug and olive green fireplace are set against the dark window sashes, doors and black lacquered mantel in the living room.

The live-edge coffee table has been in Stephanie Andrews' family for years: her grandfather made it in the 1970s and it's a favorite piece.

A key architectural feature is the curved arch ceiling in the master bedroom, which reminds the homeowners of a ship. The low mid-century modern furniture fits with the dimensions of the upstairs space.

The front porch's rattan sofa is often a napping and reading spot. Colorful accents include the turquoise front door.

The backyard's colorful and modern makeover replaced a brick patio with a deck that offered room for dining and gathering.

The tree house rises and connects to the loft over the garage. It's among the updates that modernized and reclaimed the backyard, which previously had a small hill and water issues. The retaining wall also designated a space for a garden with a modern Japanese feel, homeowner Stephanie Andrews said.

The treehouse, equipped with a hammock, was added to the backyard several years ago and continues to be used by the family.

Edward and Stephanie Andrews built the treehouse several years ago in their Candler Park backyard. Edward is works for UPS, and Stephanie is the founder of Balance Design.
