The traditional home in Brookhaven has 2,689 square feet, four bedrooms and three baths. It was built in 1998.

Being around water is naturally soothing and relaxing, especially with the sound of the waterfall, said homeowner Joyce Jarema. She resurfaced the pool with a Pebble Tec finish and installed new tile. It was an unexpected expense but created a beautiful pool with clear water, she said.

The hedgehog lamps, from Target, are unexpected and pretty elements in the entryway, said homeowner Joyce Jarema. The mirror is from Kirkland's and the vase is an Jonathan Adler piece from several years ago.

Humorous artwork by Angela Rossi lines the upstairs hallway. Joyce Jarema said she saw some of the artwork as note cards and loved her style.

One change that saved money but didn't sacrifice style was adding vessel sinks to the existing vanity, which gave the bathroom a modern look. New sinks and plumbing fixtures join existing cabinets, knobs and makeup vanity in the bright white bathroom.

They added a black-and-white rug to coordinate with the look of the existing shower tile and marble floors in the bathroom.

To update the master bathroom, she installed new plumbing fixtures and faucets from Amazon on the existing vanities. The grout was recolored gray to freshen up the floors.

The porch now is screened in, but the homeowner kept the ceiling painted blue. The outdoor sofa and rug are from Target. The black wicker chairs are by Lloyd Flanders. There's a connection to the homeowner's grandmother, who had furniture by the same manufacturer at her home in Michigan.

In the powder room, the Thibaut wallpaper was a necessity to cover up faded wallpaper without having to install new drywall. The timeless pattern combines with a chunky mirror from Overstock that the homeowner painted white.

Hedgehog lamps and a blue rug give the foyer a vibrant and lighthearted look. The fluffy Flokati bench with acrylic legs is from Amazon.

The home's high-low style includes a Biedermeier-style dining table and chairs paired with an affordable settee from Walmart.

The living room was transformed into an entertainment area with an air hockey table and framed photos of musicians and singers David Byrne, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, James Brown, Anthony Kiedis and George Clinton

The curvy lines of the Biedermeier-style dining table and chairs, from Nottingham Antiques, are elegant and timeless, said homeowner Joyce Jarema. She appreciates how Dave Moore layers colors in his paintings. "I never get tired of them," she said.

In the renovations, the mantel also was redesigned. Joyce Jarema painted the double rocker to match the palette, which combines pieces from CB2, West Elm, Hayneedle, Ikea and World Market.

A mini bar on a white tray from World Market combines vases from CB2 and Ikea with handblown glasses from Janke Studios in Atlanta.

Repainted white cabinets give the Brookhaven kitchen a classic and timeless update. The countertops are granite and the pendants are from Pottery Barn.

Original artwork by Dave Moore and patterns in the carpet tiles from FLOR give the family room a modern and whimsical design style. The slipcovered sofas are from Ikea and the Abbyson Janley coffee table is from Hayneedle.

The kitchen was big enough for a table, especially with space-saving solutions such as benches that allow barstools to pull up to the peninsula. The furniture and accessories are from Target, Ikea, Pottery Barn and Overstock.

A tray from Target holds affordable accessories, such as a vase from HomeGoods and a planter with succulents from Ikea.

A white and gray geometric rug from Overstock, bedspread from West Elm and gray bedskirt from Stein Mart are paired in one of the home's four bedrooms.

The homeowner covered the side tables from Pier 1 Imports with glass tops for an extra touch. The artwork is from World Market and the teal headboard is from Walmart.

Jennifer Eanes Foster with Eanes Foster Design (left) and Joyce Jarema (right) made quick, cost-conscious decisions for a high-low makeover in Jarema's Brookhaven home.
