Kenny Rogers' flair for the exotic

Singer Kenny Rogers and his wife, Wanda, purchased this 9,000-square-foot Valley Road home in December 2006. See photos of this Buckhead mansion which the famous singer decorated himself.

BY JULIE HAIRSTON: Wanda Rogers was the first to spot this 9,000-square-foot Valley Road home perched majestically on a Buckhead rise in 2006, but the house wasn't for sale at the time. A few months later, the home went on the market, so Wanda and her husband, singer Kenny Rogers, bought and renovated it. They moved in with their twin boys in December 2006.

Kenny Rogers coordinates his many creative and business interests from this office just to the right of the home's entrance. The office is a showcase for his many Grammys, gold and platinum records and other awards and honors. Currently, Rogers is coordinating the construction of a new home for his family in Nicholson, Ga., near Athens, planning two upcoming overseas tours and working on several creative projects.

This intricately carved bench greets visitors to the Rogers home in its front foyer. Its Asian styling signals the international influence that informs Kenny Rogers' decor preferences. He describes his style as "high-end eclectic. I love Chinese. I love Italian. And in almost every house I have had, I have an African Room."

On the other side of the front foyer, the formal living room features Rogers' signature design elements, which include mirrors that help brighten the room, an Earth-tone palette and dashes of Asian styling. "I touched every inch of this house," Rogers said.

This handsome lion's head was created especially for the Rogers' home by Terry Francois of Stone Age Designs. The artisan uses classical European models to fashion distinctive mantels and other architectural flourishes such as columns and arches. "He's the best," Rogers said.

The living room also displays this etched elephant plate. Much of the decor includes souvenirs of the Rogers' extensive international travels. With their four-year-old twins to consider now, Rogers said he plans to spend less time on the road.

Rogers had the handsome wrought-iron pothook fashioned over the island in his sleek, open kitchen. Featuring Wolf appliances and dark cabinets, the kitchen's open design is flanked by a comfortable keeping room. The windows at the back overlook the swimming pool. The nearby dining room seats 12.

A priceless collection of autographed portraits lines the walls of Rogers' media room on the terrace level. These photos were shot by Rogers himself and published as a book. In addition to the photos seen here, the collection includes such luminaries as Lucille Ball, Clint Eastwood, Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr. and Elizabeth Taylor.

This oversized banquette looks over the pool and back yard. Nearby, a miniature version scaled down for his four-year-old twins occupies a nook next to the keeping room.

A face panel flanks this table in a corner of the terrace level. The rich burgundy and gold extend the Asian feel of the panel.

The color theme extends to this sitting area near the pool patio. The terrace level also includes a snack kitchen and six-seat bar.

Upstairs, the master suite offers a royal retreat with a sturdy four-poster bed, an "opera" tray ceiling with gilt ledges, and rich golden linens. An arched doorway and curtains separate the bed chamber from the sitting room.

Also upstairs, Rogers created his Africa room in a guest suite. The faux finish wall imparts a rustic feel extended by the textured wood floor. The zebra painting over the bed is echoed by a zebra rug on the floor and an animal-print throw on the bed. The suite also includes Africa-scene photos taken by Rogers.

The natural mane on the zebra rug in the Africa room shows it's a real zebra skin.

Even the light fixture in the Africa room includes a detailed motif of native animals and distinctive patterning.
