Atlanta Koi Club auction this weekend

The annual auction allows members to sell their koi, enabling them to go to good homes where they will be well cared for. This event is another way that the club can educate people about the hobby and promote its membership.

Castel followed in his father's footsteps when he created his koi pond. "I guess the most enjoyment I get is when I can take my young boys out to the pond, let them sit on the pond wall with their feet in the water and watch them giggle and tell me which koi is their favorite and why," he said.

Castel's koi collection is the focal point of a pond in the backyard of his Woodstock home. The free auction and plant sale will be held at 10 a.m. April 19 at Coastal Pond Supply, 2101 Tucker Industrial Blvd. in Tucker. www.atlantakoiclub.org.

Castel owns 21 koi, including these in his back yard and more exotic koi raised in Niigata, Japan.

Castel has paid upward of $3,500 for a single koi. But when he stocked his pond eight years ago, he paid $25 a fish.
