Photos: Coca-Cola Santa paintings come to Callanwolde

Because of renovations at The Coca-Cola campus, several large holiday ornaments usually seen only internally by Coca-Cola employees, will also be shown at Callanwolde. This painting is from 1949.

The Coca-Cola Company wanted to link Santa Claus and Christmas to its flagship soft drink because people generally thought of Coke only during the hot summer months. This painting is from 1960.

The image of Santa as a jolly old man in a bright red suit with a gentle smile, rosy cheeks and long white beard was created for The Coca-Cola Company by illustrator Haddon Sundblom in 1931. Fourteen original oil paintings of Sundblom’s beloved Santas, including this one from 1948, will be on view at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta from Dec. 1 – 16, 2014. Tickets are $20\ and $15 for groups and can be purchased at callanwolde.org or at the door.

Callanwolde was the home of Charles Howard Candler, the oldest son of Asa Candler, Coca-Cola’s founder. Charles Candler was president of the Company from 1916 to 1923, and lived at Callanwolde for 39 years, from 1920 to 1959. This painting is from 1954.
