Jan. 30, 2012 - Atlanta - Honor Guard member Sgt. Debbie Joe stands with the flag used during the funeral for Senior Police Officer Gail Thomas at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta. Feb. 7, 2012 - Gwinnett County - A wayward deer scampers across the infield while a small jet aircraft lands at Gwinnett County Airport at Briscoe Field. This is one of my favorite photos of the year. I didn't see the deer until I edited the photos later that afternoon. Bob Andres bandres@ajc.com

Feb. 28, 2012 - Dalton - Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich kicked off a two day bus tour with a stop in Dalton Tuesday morning. After his speech he greeted and signed autographs for most of the members of the crowd. The election had lots of ups and downs. For awhile, Georgia's own Newt Gingrich was the front runner, and he used his home field advantage to win the Georgia primary. Bob Andres bandres@ajc.com

March 16, 2012 - Dunwoody - Shawn Washington (right) was the first in line at 9pm Thursday at the Perimeter Mall Apple store, and the first to receive the new iPad, presented to him by Apple Specialist Laura Ingle (left). Anyone who loves gadgets can relate to being the first in line for the latest iPad. Bob Andres bandres@ajc.com

March 12, 2012 - Acworth - Eddie Lance separates debris from grease trap grease as it is unloaded for processing. While I like composition created by the pipes and hoses, this is memorable because this was one of the worst smelling places I have ever been too. It's laudable that this company is able to recycle grease trap grease, but I had to go home afterwards to take a shower and change clothes to get the smell out. April 17, 2012 - Chattooga County - The Rolling Ramp at Howard Finster's Paradise Garden, near Summerville, provides accessibility to view the gardens and artwork for everyone. I like photos that have some subtlety to them, that reveal themselves the more you look at them. You might not notice it right away, but the dog is real and was trying to lick my face a moment after this photo was taken. If you are an art lover, Paradise Garden is worth a trip. May 21, 2012 - Atlanta - Clark Atlanta University Graduates cheer and wave to the crowd as their degrees are conferred. Graduations are one of those moments that brings a smile and a tear. I liked the combination of cheering and blowing a kiss. BOB ANDRES / BANDRES@AJC.COM

May 30, 2012 - McDonough - "Stick out your tongue", Thayer Garrett says as she prompts Kenneth while brushing his teeth. It's a little after 6am, and Thayer Garrett (right) is getting her four year old grandson, Kenneth Garrett II ready for school. Thayer Garrett has been taking care of her toddler-age grandson since his father died. This is just a heart warming moment I think we can all relate to. I had to get up really early for this one! June 9, 2012 - Atlanta - The "Truly Tremendous Tech Tower T ", from Atlanta, heads down the Red Bull Soapbox Race 2012 track on 10th Street at Piedmont Park. This was a silly and fun event, and it was difficult to choose a favorite photo. I chose this because of the arm raised in "victory" and the message for Tech's "Arch" rivals. August 3, 2012 - Atlanta - About a dozen Gay marriage supporters attended a 1pm "kiss-in" at the Chick-fil-A store at Colony Square in protest of company president Dan Cathy's stand on the makeup of marriage. Gay marriage and Gay rights was a major issue in this years election campaign. BOB ANDRES / BANDRES@AJC.COM

August 14, 2012 - Atlanta - Prince Abdela, a poor 17-year-old from a village in Zimbabwe, gets dressed in his dorm room for a reception of foreign students with the Morehouse president. He was accepted into a Morehouse College program sponsored by a local philanthropist that gave him the opportunity to move to Atlanta and fulfill his dream of going to college. Abdela had never worn a tie before. Meeting Prince Abdela made me realize how much we sometimes take for granted as Americans. BOB ANDRES / BANDRES@AJC.COM

September 25, 2012 - Atlanta - Cab driver George Mallory toots his own horn -- his sax, that it -- as he waits for fares outside the Hyatt Regency downtown. He said he has been playing for 55 years. Oct. 26, 2012 - Jacksonville, FL - Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Jarvis Jones celebrates his recovery of a Trey Burton fumble during the Georgia vs. Florida football game at EverBank Field in Jacksonville. I love to shoot football, but don't often get the opportunity, so it was great to be in Jacksonville to see Georgia beat Florida with a dominant defense. BOB ANDRES BANDRES@AJC.COM
