Women are reportedly the fastest growing segment of Americans becoming gun owners. March 25, 2013 - Atlanta - Dante, in his restaurant office, is seldom without his pipe. Dante Stephensen, owner of Dante's Down the Hatch, says he is planning to close his long standing restaurant. The restaurant, which calls itself a "Jazz and Fondue Restaurant and Club", features a life sized pirate ship and a pond with a live alligator. An Atlanta institution since the '70s, Dante, a train enthusiast that lives in an antique train car, makes it a point to visit each table. He personally presents their chocolate fondue, which is only offered once per night, with colorful stories about his travels and the history of chocolate. April 25, 2013 - Forest Park - Tresea Johnson (left)(cq), director, joins Antwone McDowell at the listening station during "center" time at Childcare Network in Forest Park. President Obama may have just touted Georgia's pre-k program as a model for the nation, but researchers at Reutgers won't give it the same high marks this year as last. May 13, 2013 - Atlanta - UPDATED CAPTION - Five members of the group "No Strings Attached" perform Emory's Alma Mater a cappella at the close of graduation. Former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winner Rita Dove delivered the keynote address at Emory's 168th commencement on the Emory quadrangle for about 4,200 graduating students and their families. June 18, 2013 - Atlanta - Brandon Stokes, 11, is one of the students tutored in a GSU graduate level class that trains teachers to teach literacy. Georgia State Graduate students in education learn how to teach literacy by working with students from After School All Stars Atlanta after school program. Colleges in Georgia fared okay to not so great in the National Council on Teacher Quality report, which rates teacher preparation programs and concluded that �a vast majority of teacher preparation programs do not give aspiring teachers adequate return on their investment of time and tuition dollars.� BOB ANDRES / BANDRES@AJC.COM

June 20, 2013 - Atlanta - Sonia Simon, holding her "sword" (bible) high, joins in the daily morning prayer session at Every Woman Works in Sandy Springs. The sessions include inspiration music with dancing and singing, prayer, and a sermon. Sonia Simon finished high school, worked for nearly a year in a public library in her Brooklyn, N.Y., community, then enlisted in the U.S. Army. It was, she decided, her best way of paying back the country that had welcomed her as an immigrant four years earlier. After the military, she had trouble adjusting to life in her adopted home of Atlanta. She sat with her back to doors in case someone tried to attack her. She forgot to put gas in her car. Once, in a rage, she destroyed a TV. In time, she and her son were homeless. Now, Simon, 32, is on the rebound. She's got a new job, a home, and is trying to restore balance to her life. Aug 3, 2013 - Alpharetta - Richard Burke (back right), as the area Shiners' Chief Rabban, rides in a vintage Cadillac in the Old Soldiers Day Parade in Alpharetta. The City of Alpharetta and the American Legion Post 201 held the 61st Annual Old Soldiers Day Parade in downtown Alpharetta. The parade featured marching bands, military units, floats, clowns, classic cars, and candy. Richard and Judy Burke, whose granddaughter died after suffering an accidental bathtub scalding while in their care, reconciled themselves with the child's death, their relationship with the child's mother (their daughter) and went on to to raise $4 million for the Shriners in gratitude for all they did trying to save the child. Nov. 12, 2013 - Atlanta - Rose Thomas lives in the Summerhill neighborhood. A deteriorating row of businesses on Georgia Ave. near Turner Field is a testament to the futility of making any economic progress around the Summerhill neighborhood of Atlanta. Poor neighborhoods, crimes, and a lack of vision and commitment have left the land languish. A man named John Elder owned most of those properties �and numerous gypsy lots �and resisted making any improvements through the years. Elder was killed in a car wreck this year and his land was in limbo. BOB ANDRES / BANDRES@AJC.COM

Nov. 25, 2013 - Marietta - John Loud (center) leads a group calling themselves "Cobb Home of the Braves" and demonstrated in favor of moving forward without delay. They held a press conference on the square following the one by "Citizens for Governmental Transparency", and chanted "let them play, no delay" while doing the "chop". A coalition of advocacy groups, in a press conference on the Cobb Government Center steps, called for a 60-day delay in the Cobb County Commission's scheduled vote on Tuesday for a new $672 million Braves stadium. Calling themselves the "Citizens for Governmental Transparency", they are asking the Cobb County Board of Commissioners to delay the Tuesday, November 26, 2013 proposed Braves stadium vote for a minimum of 60 days.
