Gorilla gives birth at Zoo Atlanta

Kudzoo is a mom.

The 17-year-old western lowland gorilla at Zoo Atlanta gave birth to her second offspring Monday morning.

The baby, whose sex won’t be known for several weeks, since gorilla mothers keep their infants close to their bodies, is the third grandchild of the late Willie B., the beloved silverback gorilla who died in 2000.

Zoo Atlanta houses 24 gorillas, the nation’s largest collection. Since 1988, 19 have been born at the zoo and 17 still reside there, including Macy Baby, 5, the first offspring of Kudzoo and her 21-year-old partner, Taz.
