History: Furkids, which opened in 2002, is the largest no-kill, cage-free shelter in Georgia, giving care to more than 5,000 animals each year.

Did you know: They recently opened Furkids in Forsyth County on a beautiful nine-acre campus. Cats hang out in "catios," and people come to volunteer, adopt or rent space for special events. Furkids also partners with 12 PetSmart and Petco stores throughout metro Atlanta, as well as the Happy Tabby Cat Cafe for adoptions.

Its motto: At Furkids, every life matters. Homeless animals receive the best medical care and nurturing environment to prepare them for adoption to a forever home.

How you can help: Make a financial donation to support Furkids programs, providing food, housing, medical care and transportation of animals to shelters outside of Georgia. Adopt or foster a pet or volunteer in the FurTales program, where all ages are welcome to read to the cats. There also are opportunities to walk dogs or donate to one of three thrift stores.
