Flashback Photos: Take Piedmont Avenue into the past

One of Atlanta's major thoroughfares, Piedmont Avenue has changed along with the city.

"Atlanta Skyline, Peachtree, New Building, March 7, 1967, F. Jillson." The first main street running towards the horizon is Andrew Young International Boulevard. Parallel to it is John Portman Boulevard, and the street intersecting both of them, parallel to the Downtown Connector, is Piedmont Avenue.

Assignment sheet attached to print identifies photographer (Charles Pugh, Jr.): " Ambassador apts. on right at 2606 Piedmont Ave. Apts. scheduled to be converted into office bldgs; people are objecting. Owner wants more money for his property. MARTA station shown on left background of photo just 1 block from apartments." Print verso date-stamped: Thu Mar 22 1984"

Jun 1963 - Atlanta, Ga: New connectors feed into north expressway upper left, Piedmont Avenue traffic (lower left) heads over new construction.

Feb. 20, 1965 - Atlanta, Ga: Cleared site for the new Atlanta Civic Center at the intersection of Forrest Avenue and Piedmont Avenue. Forrest Avenue's name has since been changed to Ralph McGill Boulevard.

A joyous sight for Piedmont Avenue motorists is this new bridge near the intersection of Piedmont and Monroe Drive, NE. Note there is traffic traveling over the new bridge. The new bridge is at least twice as wide as the old one. The temporary traffic bridge, not pictured, but to the left, could handle only two lanes of traffic. The new bridge speeds Piedmont traffic. Those traveling this section may get home earlier in the future."
