This year marks the 100th anniversary of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, which began as the Scottish Rite Convalescent Home for Crippled Children in Decatur in 1915. A young patient poses for a picture at the newly formed Hughes Spalding Pavilion Year: 1953 In the late 1940s, the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority, led by Atlanta attorney and civic leader Hughes Spalding Sr., saw the need for a hospital that could serve African American adults and children who were limited in their choice of provider. The proposed hospital would not only provide care for African Americans, but also function as a training facility for African American doctors at a time when no such hospital existed in Atlanta. Zuber, Scottish Rite Inspector General for Georgia; Donna Latner, 13, a patient from Columbus; and Wilbur F. Glenn, vice chairman of the board of trustees attend the groundbreaking for the $4 million, 160-bed Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children on May 23 1975. By 1975, the name of the hospital had changed to Scottish Rite Children's Hospital. The new facility replaced the 1919 hospital in Decatur, Georgia.
