Flashback Photos: Andrew Young through the years

The civil rights activist, politician and humanitarian has been a fixture in Atlanta for more than 50 years. Here's a quick look at the life and career of Andrew Young.

During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's, Young was one of the principal lieutenants to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Young (far right) is shown here in a 1968 photo with Rev. Joseph Lowery (left) and Ralph David Abernathy.

Young began to rise as a politician in the 1970's, Here he's shown with current U.S. Rep. John Lewis in 1976 when Young held Georgia's 5th congressional district seat.

Young left Congress to become U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in 1977. Lewis ran unsuccessfully for the vacated seat that year, but won the seat in 1986 and has held it ever since.

Young was elected Mayor of Atlanta in 1982, a position he held for eight years.
