The people who do CrossFit will be the first to tell you how great CrossFit is.

It's a nearly ubiquitous approach to fitness in the modern era— and not by accident. The workouts are challenging, the communities tight-knit and the results for those who stay with it are compelling.

With more than a dozen Atlanta locations, there are subtle differences between each gym, making it a little overwhelming to decide which CrossFit is best for you.

These are some of Atlanta's most popular locations:

Fitness Battalion CrossFit and BootCamp

1242 Booth St. NW

404-436-6433

The thing about Fitness Battalion is that its not CrossFit. Well, it is CrossFit, but it's also Boot Camp. Having access to both the traditional CrossFit WOD (or workout of the day, for the uninitiated) and the more open-aired work done at Boot Camp provides access to two great workouts in one gym community. Whether you prefer the shout and grind outdoor experience of Boot Camp or the weightlifting-centric CrossFit model, Fitness Battalion has a game plan for reshaping your rounded edges.

AK CrossFit

764 Miami Circle

404-352-1140

Located just around the corner from Loca Luna, and The Painted Pin, AK CrossFit is perhaps the most popular CrossFit location in Atlanta. The class sizes, despite this, are manageable and the staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. It's a great place for a beginner to cut their CrossFit teeth.

BTB CrossFit

3209-R Maple Drive NE

404-688-0100

Situated in an old warehouse, marked with minimal signs and flags, BTB embodies much of the CrossFit cultural identity in its location. It feels gritty, an underground gym for underground people. That it's among the most celebrated locations to participate in the one of the most celebrated workout programs in Atlanta makes it decidedly not underground, of course; but that doesn't change the fact that it's got the vibe right. It feels cool going to BTB and busting out the weights. It's the kind of place your six-months in two-minutes training montage could take place. The gym offers classes for all schedules and great equipment, along with a Tuesday morning owner-taught class, continuing education programs and meet-ups to strengthen the bond between athletes.

CrossFit North Atlanta

1730 Taylor St.

404-355-4500

The gym (or 'box' in CrossFit-ese), at CrossFit North Atlanta is huge with some cool murals integrating the space with its purpose. The staff at this location are knowledgeable, and of note for beginners, this location stands for the warm welcome and inviting atmosphere.

CrossFit Rx

1185 Zonolite Rd

770-402-0135

If you've got workout fever in Candler Park, the only prescription is more dumbbell. This CrossFit has a few notable offerings, like the Masters class for folks 50-and-up. It's a friendly gym, and one without a lot of pressure. But it's most noteworthy for its cleanly and well kept equipment; it's surprisingly clean for a place people sweat all day.
