Which Atlantans might be in the book on America's black elite?

Andy Young. Born in New Orleans to a prominent dentist and a schoolteacher. As a young man joined the civil rights movement as a close aide to Martin Luther King Jr. Went on to become a U.S. congressman, the mayor of Atlanta and the country's first African-American ambassador to the United Nations. He has become an Atlanta elder statesman and helped the city secure the 1996 Olympics.

Bishop Eddie L. Long. Senior pastor of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, one of the largest churches in the South. His prosperity ministry has grown from 300 people when he took over the church in 1987 to more than 30,000 members now.

John Lewis. A U.S. congressman whose district encompasses large parts of Atlanta. An Alabama native, Lewis is one of America's iconic civil rights figures and is the former chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

Shirley Clarke Franklin. Atlanta's first female mayor and the first black woman elected mayor of a major Southern city. A native of Philadelphia, Franklin graduated from Howard University and her father was a judge.

The Scotts: Atlanta Daily World Publisher C.A. Scott.

Louis Wade Sullivan. An Atlanta native and graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Sullivan served as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and was a founder of the Morehouse School of Medicine.

The Dobbses: Civic leader John Wesley Dobbs.

David Satcher. The former surgeon general of the United States and the first African-American male to hold the position when he was appointed in 1998 by Bill Clinton. A graduate of Morehouse, he also served as president of the Morehouse School of Medicine.

Leah Ward Sears. The Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. She is the only African-American female chief justice in the United States and when she was first appointed to the court in 1992, she became the first woman and youngest person to sit on the state's highest court.

Hank Aaron. The former Atlanta Braves great and until recently -- and still disputed -- the all-time home-run king with 755 dingers. But Aaron has also become quite the businessman, opening up several car dealerships in town, as well as a Krispy Kreme franchise.
