Sand tiger sharks added to Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium has obtained six sand tiger sharks which will be on display at the downtown attraction by Thanksgiving.

One of three new male sand tiger sharks displays several rows of sharp teeth while swimming in his new home Friday. The males are joined by three females, all of which will soon be seen swimming at the Georgia Aquarium.

A tooth from one of the sand tiger sharks. The sharks use their teeth early, the first two eggs to hatch feed on the remaining eggs and embryos while still within the mother. At birth, the surviving one or two pups are already more than 3 feet long.

The sand tiger shark is the only shark known to adjust its buoyancy by gulping or expelling air. This strategy allows the shark to hover nearly motionless in the water.

One of the three female sand tiger sharks eats Friday morning. The six new fish will be introduced into the Ocean Voyager gallery at the Georgia Aquarium before Thanksgiving.
