A new sneaker from Nike celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Atlanta Olympics is kicking up dust online, ahead of its July release.
Called Atlanta 96, the shoe incorporates colors and designs from the 1996 logo, and hearkens back to a time when the eyes of the world were on Peachtree.
Sneaker bloggers are excited.
"As we all know, the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta is hands down the GOAT," wrote an Atlanta native over at theshoegame.com. "It's not even up for debate. Do your homework and you'll see the light. That said, Nike created a special edition Air Trainer SC High to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the '96 A-Town Olympics in all of its logo glory."
Atlanta is already sneaker-mad, as witnessed by the crowds at "The Rise of Sneaker Culture" exhibit at the High Museum. This should just fan the flames.
The shoe features teal green leather uppers, white and metallic gold accents, an embroidered peach on the tongue and translucent outsoles with a confetti print.
The shoe, at a retail price of $140, was originally scheduled for a July 19 release date, but has been postponed, according to some store managers. “Nike has pushed back the shoe,” said Judy Martinez, assistant store manager of The Athlete’s Foot in Cumberland Mall. “They didn’t tell us when,” she added. “We have it in stock, but we cannot sell it until Nike says OK.”
Martinez said she’s received more than 30 calls about the shoe just on Monday morning.
According to theshoegame.com, the shoes will be available at these stores:
